I agree with this editorial: we cannot have additional illegal Muni sickouts. This weeks sickout was damaging to our economy and negatively impacted hundreds of thousands of residents. Muni drivers have a tough job and deserve to be treated fairly, but illegally shutting down the largest transit system in the Bay Area isnt acceptable. Weve taken firm action, with each leader playing his or her role. I authored an emergency resolution Tuesday unanimously putting the Board of Supervisors on record opposing the sickout and demanding that the drivers come back to work. City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a petition with state labor authorities seeking relief. The MTA announced that drivers would be paid sick time only with a doctors note, and Mayor Lee provided strong and vocal support for the agencys firm stance. We have enormous work to do to get Muni back on track. With $2.2 billion in deferred maintenance, the need to rehabilitate or replace the entire fleet, the important task of adjusting the system to reflect 2014 San Francisco, and more capital needs in the future, we need to focus like a laser on shoring the system up and expanding its capacity to meet the needs of a growing population. No more sickouts; much more work to fix this system.
