I always appreciated music. At home my dad loved boeremusiek and opera; my grandpa cowboy tunes and jazz; my grandma old Negro spiritual tunes and the blues. But if you grew up in rural South Africa you could not miss the local music. As a barefoot Afrikaner kid running around these little towns I had another privilege: I got to hear all these wonderful melodies coming from seemingly everywhere. A few women under a tree, a chain gang singing next to the road (although I cant seem to recall any real chains), a lone guitarist playing in the street for alms, or the farm workers on grandpas farm. The music was everywhere. And though I most often did not understand the words, it always seemed to touch my soul. Here is a small example of the kind of stuff I grew to love so much. This one appears on Eagle Records seminal release of tunes recorded by the South African Broadcasting Corporation between 1959 and 1994, Volume 3. To my knowledge these recordings have never before been released for public consumption. Unfortunately it seems like these are now all out of print.
