French official statements (June, 20, 2014) Mr. Laurent Fabius’s participation in the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Luxembourg, June 23, 2014) Mr. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will participate in the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on June 23. Discussions will focus on the following issues: - Iraq: In the presence of Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, UN Special Representative for Iraq, the ministers will review the situation in Iraq and the EU’s response; - Syria: Discussions will focus on support for the political transition as well as on humanitarian assistance; - Libya: The ministers will discuss the most recent political and security developments as well as the response to illegal migration flows; - Ukraine: Mr. Pavlo Klimkin, Ukraine’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, will present the measures announced by President Poroshenko. The ministers will review the situation on the ground and Russia’s role. They will also discuss the future EU civilian mission aimed at reforming the security sector in Ukraine; - Eastern Partnership: There will be an update on the signing, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the European Council on June 26 and 27, of the association agreements with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. - World Refugee Day (June 20, 2014) On the occasion of World Refugee Day, France reaffirms its commitment in support of all refugees. It actively supports the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which plays a critical role in providing assistance to more than 51 million uprooted people around the world, including 16 million refugees. France is traditionally a country where people are welcomed and given asylum and ranks second in Europe in terms of the number of applications for international protection, with more than 66,000 applications received in 2013. As of December 31, 2013, more than 186,000 people, including more than 170,000 refugees, were placed under the protection of the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons. Attractiveness of France – Meeting between Ms. Fleur Pellerin and the president of the Danish company, ALK (Paris, June 19, 2014) Ms. Fleur Pellerin, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, the Promotion of Tourism and French Nationals Abroad, met yesterday with Mr. Jens Bager, President of the Danish company, ALK, which specializes in pharmaceuticals. She welcomed the decision to strengthen ALK’s presence in France by investing a further €22 million in its facility in Vandeuil (Marne). In particular, the minister of state welcomed the fact that this new investment, facilitated through the support of local stakeholders and the Invest in France Agency, resulted in the creation of 30 jobs. During this meeting, Ms. Fleur Pellerin reaffirmed that foreign investment accounts for 21% of jobs in France and 30% of our exports.
