I always enjoy these productions from the Philharmonia Orchestra taking us inside The Planets by Gustav Holst. A good summary here of how Holst builds tension in the Mars movement through his choice of everything from time signature to the way he asks string players to use their bows to the way he writes ascending and descending melodic lines. Fascinating stuff musically illustrated by Esa Pekka Salonen and an excellent group of London-based musicians. You might want to give this a look and listen after you hear Mars this afternoon on KING FM---Dave Beck
