I always knew what sort of writer I wanted to be. I didnt know what sort of writer I didnt want to be. I hadnt realized the variety that was out there. I had read lots of things, and I knew, somehow, there was difference, but I never named it. And it seems strange to me now, that although I knew what I wanted to write, it was only by discerning what I didnt want to write that I arrived as a writer. Arrived to myself, not to you, or to strangers, but to myself. So that now, when I look in the mirror, even this morning, I dont see me at all. Instead I see the stack of books Im going to write. I see their titles, chapters, outlines, beginnings, endings. While I always knew what sort of writer I wanted to be, I had no idea what shape that writing would take. Now I do. Its a peaceful yet jubilant feeling. Taking the week off of writing this week, but back to working on the book on Panama next week. Thank you for your kindness and direction, to all of my mentors and friends.
