I am SO excited about the WWDC! Why? As an educational technology consultant and pediatric speech therapist specializing in iPad Apps & Autism, people frequently ask me why I am so tech oriented, especially towards Apple™ products....Here are 3 iPad related answers to ponder, correlating to what will be reportedly be revealed there this week: 1. iOS 7 for iPad: a) I would love Apple™ to address the "sandboxing" issue so that I can create content (audio, visual) in one App, and transfer it to another, to view/share/store, for therapy sessions/homework and b) I would love to see some "under the hood" features in Settings that allow me to more easily (Accessibility features were built in for iOS 6 for AAC users but not Autism users) to actually highlight a section of an App or create a "hot section" like "hotkeys", to emphasize the photo/action/vocabulary for a more memorable "teachable moment". 2. Siri Upgrade: Speech therapists with large caseloads can find that iCloud storage needs to be managed manually on the iPad, leading to the "turn on/off" game that wastes time, can cause lost data, and is a real pain to address in Settings. I would like to see Siri used to command more of these automated tasks in Settings, or even have Siri open specific iCloud Backups from last week or last month, so that I can retrieve that categorization worksheet or Social Story I created for a student on a Drawing or Photo Collage App, but forgot to take a screenshot of it, export to Photos, Email, or Dropbox. I also want Siri for my Macbook Air! 3. iRadio: The second goal of my developmental, multi-sensory Socially Speaking™ Social Skills Curriculum is Expressing Feelings. Those who have attended my seminars know that I am always searching for FREE MP3 (music-audio) files for my Playlists, to internalize subject matter, foster Theory of Mind (perspective, empathy), and trigger Episodic Memory. If iRadio works like Pandora, with a bit of iTunes and VidtoMP3 capability thrown in, and stays free, the implications for teachable moments and reinforcement of good behavior/performance for children with Autism are multiplying, as I write this! I just hope that if I use the iRadio App in Airplane Mode, all the pesky ads that make it free, will disappear, like they do when I do that with other free Apps I use in treatment :) Please share this post with other special educators using the iPad in treatment with youngsters with Autism, thanks!
