I am a 1985 Alum of Percy L. Julian High School. Noted, this is 28 years later yet I am here to state that nothing of this nature ever occurred when I attended the school and Gangs did exist in the City of Chicago. Gangs have existed in the City of Chicago since Capone and before. Nevertheless, the school system, community, and parents functioned differently. There was respect for authority. Faculty, administrators, and staff managed this school with dutiful diligence. We as students admired, loved, and respected them because they in turn did the same. There was also no such thing as Zero Tolerance and this Draconian, Quasi-Military, Police State to deal with problems of adolescents. Expectations where set and appropriate discipline was administered. Now, faculty, administrators, and staff can only call the police because they are stripped of their ability to enact discipline. If you are a teacher you cant even raise your voice to a student without the threat of losing your license and job. There are many problems here and its not just the students and it certainly doesnt solely rest on the teachers and parents. The system is also broken. I love Percy Lavon Julian High School. I pray that it can return to its former greatness! Jaguar 4 Life! #J4L
