I am a Land Surveyor But Kiss me as a Geomatician I love being rebranded as a Geomatician. “You know I am getting sick and tired of the lack of status we get from the public. I mean – they would let an engineer or a high school principal sign a passport, but not me. People think we just the ones by the side of the road looking through that camera on the mount or tripod. Back at the undergraduate level we were labelled “Bush Engineers” Instead of telling people I am a Land Surveyor, I should be telling them I am a Geomatician. What clarity does that offer? Who is going to bow to me with reverence with this new and so obviously understandable title? Well, maybe doing something that will offer the public clarity. Something everyone can relate to and understand. Some new brand that will demand respect while at the same time creating a connection to the public. Something powerful. Something modern with a hint of history. Something that tells them we are the pinnacle of professionalism. I guess with these understanding and clarity I can tell them I am a Geomatician, everyone will know exactly what I do and my status will increase just at the mere mention of my more obvious and suitable title. Students will clamber at the door of universities offering courses that will lead to this title. Law, Medical and Engineering students will switch courses mid stride. Fame and fortune will be our reward. Our community will look to us for leadership. Our children will be treated like royalty. We will finally get the recognition that we so truly deserve. Rebranding ourselves may have been a good idea. But we may as well have rebranded ourselves as great thinkers experts. Geomaticians. Come on! Really? Geomaticians? I am still shaking my head.
