I am a member of the Placer County Speakers Bureau. A growing group of us are trained to share our lived experience with issues pertaining to mental illness in all aspects as a consumer or a family member. We are looking for new audiences to speak to. Our speeches have gotten very good reviews and we have shared with law enforcement, schools and colleges, faith based organizations and community groups. We can speak to specific issues including suicide prevention, self harm, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or any of a wide range of other topics related to mental health. Our emphasis is on recovery and our stories are meant to inspire hope and eradicate stigma. All of us have lived experience and we have over come tremendous obstacles and firmly believe that anyone can enjoy recovery. Recovery does not mean cure but rather the philosophy that anyone with a mental health condition can return to a productive life and fully participate in the community in which they choose. We are also looking for folks that would like to learn to write their stories and are willing to go out into the community to openly share their story. We do an initial interview then we ask you to attend four meetings and we ask you to write your story which is a step by step process...and we assist and encourage you every step of the way.
