I am asking each of my friends and family to sign this petition asking the President of the United States to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to C.R. Rick Rescorla for his heroism, devotion to America, and noble actions which saved the lives of thousands of people on the morning of 9/11/2001. A former platoon leader in the Vietnam war, Rescorla was decorated with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf cluster, the Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He took part in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley. During that battle he distinguished himself with such bravery that his troops nicknamed him Hard Core. When the battle became very brutal, Rescorla sang songs to keep his platoon calm. Years after the Vietnam War Rescorla became head of security for Morgan Stanley where he developed an evacuation plan for all employees who worked in the World Trade Center towers. When the attacks of 9/11 occured all but 6 employees out of 2700 made it out of the towers alive because Rescorla implemented his evacuation plan in spite of the WTC encouraging people to remain in their offices. Rescorla stayed at the towers and was last seen heading back up inside tower II to evacuate still more people before it collapsed. Like he did in the Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam, Rescorla sang to keep folks spirits up as they evacuated the towers. He and three of his deputies perished while saving others.
