I am disappointed that the Economist puts its name on such a sloppy analysis. Surely Singapore has become more expensive, especially real estate, but the title if most expensive city in the world could not be more wrong. Any Economics student would know better than to do this analysis using plain exchange rates, and anyone who has ever been to Singapore would know that one normally doesnt need to own a car here given superb public transport, have annualized the 10y upfront car tax, and realized that clothes are not as expensive as it sounds... plus you actually need a very different wardrobe in the tropics than in Europe. Clearly, places like London, Paris or Sydney are way more expensive than Singapore. This analysis is flawed and sloppy. - from the comments.
