I am due at the end of March, and am planning a natural hospital - TopicsExpress

I am due at the end of March, and am planning a natural hospital birth in Maryland (I had a great natural hospital birth with my daughter a year and a half ago). If possible, Id like to decline the erythromycin drops this time since neither my husband nor I have ever had an STD, and seeing my two other children with the drops in their eyes after their birth really bothered me. However, Im having a hard time finding just WHICH states require it by law (I know New York does; Im in Maryland, which is not homebirth friendly, so Im worried the laws are strict about it here.) Does anyone know where I can find this info so I can confidently present it to the hospital upon my delivery? And secondly, is there any reputable information that shows erythromycin is good for ANYTHING besides preventing the specific eye infection caused by gonorrhea and chlamydia? As in, are there any good reasons why I SHOULD allow the erythromycin if neither I (nor my husband) have any STDs? THANK YOU!-Anonymous
