I am grateful for the beautiful women in media who are strong and smart and complex but I am also grateful for female characters who don’t need beauty to have strength and smarts and complexity. There are many things more important than beauty, and Senritsu is one example of paving the way toward real diversity in the representation of women in media. We can only hope other creators see Togashi’s example and at the very least, consider the possibility of physically “flawed” women in their work. Ive not watched this anime so I cant yet vouch for the execution, but this article illustrates quite well a discussion I regularly have with family, friends, and colleagues. I think its extremely important for us as a culture to ensure were representing the full spectrum of humanity in our art. I hope we will start to shift the emphasis in our entertainment from physical attractiveness to more tangible and enduring traits. The privilege that stems from beauty doesnt last forever, and by showing a more diverse representation of physical appearances on screen, bolstered by complex and unique personalities, we can work towards shifting priorities.
