This is an amazing result for Heather and all her family and supporters......power to the people Heather!!!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx A LONG-RUNNING row between anglers and swimmers which has stretched back over five years and triggered national headlines appears to have reached a happy conclusion. Plans to cull 50 carp at Henleaze Swimming Lake resulted in protests and the gates to the lake being super-glued shut earlier this week. And just when it appeared that there was no sign of a deal being resolved between the two groups a specialist firm in Lincolnshire came to the rescue. The row over the cull attracted national headlines and as a result Carl Francis from Mainstream Fisheries contacted the Henleaze Swimming Club offering a solution to the impasse. The club had decided to remove the carp because the were carrying the parasite Ergasilus briani which affected the clarity of the water in the lake. The plan was to carry out a third cull of the fish in the lake this week using electrocution and special netting until Mainstream Fishing stepped in. Carl Francis from the firm said: “We heard about the problems at the lake on the radio and got in touch through the Environment Agency. “We are the only company in the country which treats fish for this problem.” The firm picked up 58 carp and transported them to its headquarters in Spilsby in Lincolnshire. Mr Francis said: “We have special tanks and oxygen for the water. We brought the fish back in one trip. We will treat them over the next three or four weeks and then the fish will be farmed out to new owners across the country. “I am just glad we could be of assistance in this issue.” A spokesman for Henleaze Swimming Club said: “Following an item on the Jeremy Vine show on BBC Radio 2 on Tuesday, Carl Francis of Mainstream Fisheries contacted the Environment Agency and offered to take the fish and treat them for the category 2 fish parasite Ergasilus briani. “The club, the Environment Agency and Mainstream Fisheries have worked very hard to make this happen in a very short period of time. “The fish will now be treated for the category 2 parasite by Mainstream Fisheries and be restocked into another lake in due course. “Mainstream Fisheries are the only Environment Agency approved facility for the treatment of category 2 fish parasites in the UK. “The club would like to thank the Environment Agency, Carl Francis and David Smith (Mainstream Fisheries) and AES Europe for their help in achieving this outcome.” There are no further plans for fish stock reductions at the lake, although a further routine survey will be necessary in two to three years times to monitor the expected improvements in fish health and wellbeing. The Club will continue to work with our consultants AES Europe and the Environment Agency to develop the future management of angling at the Lake.
