I am happy to announce that I will be participating in a presentation alongside my dear friend, Yarmouk Universitys Professor of Social Work Dr. Ayat Nashwan, at the Common Bond Institutes 3rd Annual International Conference on Transgenerational Trauma. This years conference will center around tackling issues in understanding, treatment, prevention, and awareness of treating trauma in Refugee communities. We will present a session on this topic titled International Psychosocial Intervention for Refugees in the Middle East Facing Trauma: Discussion of Barriers and Possible Solutions. We believe that while many International Non-Governmental Organizations are quick to provide relief efforts and begin implementing development programs for refugees entering Jordan, the value of the cultural and religious context can oftentimes be overlooked and underestimated .Transgenerational trauma in particular poses a challenge due to its complex and interconnected nature that is bound to culture, family, and other powerful environmental factors. This form of trauma involves holistic units that may hinder results of therapy and overpower social service providers. We seek to shed light on this issue by discussing the ways in which International and local practitioners can work together to overcome these boundaries and provide the most effective care.
