I am hopeful this latest attempt on a biopic on BONIFACIO (third full-length feature) will be among the top three films in this years MMFF; just as Marilou Abaya 1998 JOSE RIZAL broke box-office records and was #1 in ticket sales in 1998. Only problem is, Robin Padilla has no idea what he is talking about when he claims that Jose Rizal was against the FREEDOM and INDEPENDENCE of the Philippines. A common mistake among the majority is to believe that just because Rizal did not give his blessing to Bonifacio- does not mean he was not in favor of an independent Philippines. Jose Rizal wanted us to deserve our FREEDOM- but if there is no other last resort- so be it. Everything that Rizal wrote laid the foundation and stepping stones to Independence. More than that- Jose Rizals foresight and genius is the most effective weapon to dispel the racial bias that Filipinos are not capable of self-government. The movie is flawed to begin with. The film depicts Rizal as counter-Revolutionary, thus implying that Rizal is anti-Filipino; and that a secret society devoid of a national constitution or revolutionary government that have yet to win a single battle to validate its stronghold with most of the archipelago, beyond Manila is enough to justify Bonifacio place in history as the countrys first president. We must remember that it was under the stars and stripes that a national monument honoring Andres Bonifacio was built to honor him as a national hero-built during the American regime.
