I am looking into the possibility if starting a school here in Bristol, one whose curriculum aims to help children manifest as the sane, personally, morally and technically empowered, radically realistic citizens of planet Earth they all most assuredly are born to be. Im thinking of a curriculum based upon mindfulness, compassion, and the 3 pillars of eco-ethics: people care, planet care, return of surplus. To my mind, an equal weighting between these 3 principles means a curriculum that grounds children in their bodies, in their environment, in their society, and in their creative potential for cognition and invention. Such a curriculum would include yoga, Taiji and qigong, Shamatha and Vipassana meditation, non-violent communication in a variety of media, community engagement, logic and mathematics, poetry and rhetoric, physics, chemistry, forest gardening and beekeeping, foraging, woodcraft, knitting and clothes making, fabrication and design. It would not neglect more traditional subjects, though it would most certainly teach things like history and geography in a manner construed to undo the ignorance of the World and its myriad stories that is inculcated by the current approach to those subjects... Whos with me? Lets start a conversation about this. I want my daughter to have the best possible education, one that gives her a chance of learning REALLY useful stuff in a way that is respectful of her nature and her needs. Ive worked in state education and frankly it scares the hell out of me. I am suspicious of both the cultishness and the unconscious elitism of Steiner schools. The only option seems to be to do it ourselves, so lets do it.
