I am more than a little annoyed by a story I heard this morning on NPR. Apparently, in most states in this country indigent defendants are being forced to pay their court costs. That line,If you cant afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Well, thats not exactly true anymore. You do get an attorney, but you pay for him or her. If the court decides you must wear an ankle bracelet, thatll cost you twelve dollars a day. One ridiculous application of this relatively new procedure, which has been going on for the last decade unbeknownst to me was the incarceration of a homeless man who had stolen a single bottle of beer. (Granted short term) Whats next debtors prisons?
