I am naturally concerned by recent events but I am also disturbed by the sensationalisation of the mainstream media. Their focusses and phrasing seems to imply that: a good story (with clearly labelled protagonists and antagonists) takes precedence over real issues (human rights, poverty, disease, starvation, unsustainability, mortality) demonisation of people, groups or countries targeted as undesired is acceptable a few hundred unexpected deaths are more tragic than the thousands of preventable but expected deaths daily caused by our own system of unequal distribution death by unconventional means should be more horrifying than other acts of war approved by the states terrorists are dehumanised vermin to be eradicated, not also people with problems to be solved (whether social, ideological or mental) death coming to Westerners is terrible, while retaliatory murderous retribution is not entertainment value of a story is more important than societal issues or public education other countries media is propaganda, definitely not ours government officials have no alterior motives and are the best analysers of any situation What alternative information sources exist without political and profit motives?
