I am no airline pilot but I can clearly tell you, this man let the plane get ahead of him and too slow. With the weight it carried plus the heat of the outside air the airplane (fell out) on him or basically stalled when it flared out on approach. This is similar to what I was taught in my training as an approach to landing stall. Must I add though, a 1959 tri pacer or Cessna 182 can recover much faster. These guys had no time to recover due to the size and weight of the aircraft. Though this was a horrible accident I would have to say it is quite amazing at the number of people who survived.
