I am not a religious person. I believe in conscience and nature and putting yourself in the other persons shoes. But many of my FB friends are religious. Some are Christians, some are Muslims, some are Hindus, some swear by the Tarot, and so on. I really dont have any problem with any of that as long as they are kind and compassionate to other people and dont try to convert me or do anything that hurts others in the name of their faith. What I DO have a problem with is people who try to rationalise their Muslim-bashing in the wake of the Sydney siege by saying that the Koran advocates violence and the subjugation of women, and therefore all Muslims need a reality check and have no right to dress how they wish or worship whomever they wish and really, they should all be sent back where they came from (even if they were born here). I hate to disillusion you guys, but the Bible advocates violence and the subjugation of women too (an eye for an eye? Really? Women shall not speak in church?), and that doesnt give you a right to bash Christians either. What, are you going to send all the Christians back to England, which is where our dominant religious culture came from? This sort of big-talk game isnt about religion or refugees or sieges. Its about power. Inadequate, small-minded people feel powerful when they make these brash, rash bigoted statements. They feel powerful when they threaten and intimidate a woman in the street for wearing a headscarf. (Hello, I wore headscarves for some time when I had cancer. Are you going to threaten me too, or isnt my skin dark enough?) They usually only do it when theyre hiding behind the anonymity of a computer, or in the company of friends to whom they want to big-note themselves. Cowards and bullies. Thats all. Delete them from your feeds, call them for their selective bigotry, give them the facts- deal with it however you like, but please dont let them get away with it. You wouldnt like it if it happened to you.
