I am not fond of grackles; however, tonight when I saw a baby grackle (about 5" long) fluttering on the ground near a fence, I felt I had to help him. He was where a cat frequents the top of that fence with a Snoopy-vulture style of pose, waiting for people and pets who come by to collect mail at the community mailbox. After trying to encourage him to flight by using my retrieved letters, I decided gloves or no, I had to scoop him into my hand. I lifted him to a branch, made sure his feet grabbed hold, let go, and he fluttered out of sight. At that point I knew all I could do was pray for his safety and wish I could have given him a drink of water! It was so hot and he had held his beak open... No, he did not think I was Mama Bird! She was squawking from the treetops along with Papa Bird, the aunts, uncles, and all the cousins!
