I am often asked what should be done with a 401k, once the investor retires. This question has merit and deserves addressing for several reasons. Once you retire, the matching contributions from your employer end along with the tax deferred income. It is at this point that the 401k investment becomes obsolete. Now we have a terrific argument for rollover alternatives. If you can no longer defer income, cannot make contributions or receive matching contributions from your employer, it might make sense to roll over your 401k because there may be better, more cost effective investment opportunities in establishing an IRA Rollover Account and using it to roll over your 401k proceeds.
