I am pleased that our government continues to stand-up for hunters - TopicsExpress

I am pleased that our government continues to stand-up for hunters and trappers. In less than 24 hours our Minister of Public Safety, Steven Blaney overturned the RCMP’s decision to phase out the use of muskrat fur in their winter hats. As Yukon’s Member of Parliament I want my position to be unequivocal. I fully support Yukon`s Fur Industry which contributes $400,00 annually to the Yukon economy. Canada’s fur trade is the oldest industry in this country and contributes more than $800 million to the Canadian economy annually. Yukon is home to 14 species of furbearing mammals that are trapped for their fur: beaver, coyote, fisher, coloured fox, Arctic fox, lynx, marten, mink, muskrat, otter, squirrel, weasel, wolf and wolverine. While the decision of the RCMP was being praised by anti-fur advocacy groups, it is in stark contrast to the position taken by Canadian delegates at the 11th Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region held in Whitehorse this year. In the conference statement, which received unanimous support, the Arctic Parliamentarians concluded “we encourage mutual understanding of the rights of the peoples of the Arctic to utilize their resources in a sustainable way, and the importance of securing their livelihoods by expanding the markets for traditional products…” As a member of the drafting committee I was a strong voice in promoting the inclusion of statements like this in our Conference Statement. The fur trade influenced the historical development of our Nation including the development and expansion into western and northern Canada including in the Yukon. Present day trapping forms a vital part of preserving our First Nation and Non First Nation commercial and traditional way of life. Many Yukoners depend on trapping and have enjoyed generations of a trapping family heritage. Our Government has always defended the rights of the people of the North and rural Canada to use their resources in a sustainable way. The RCMP and indeed all Canadians should be pleased to have our National Police Force be an organization that is proud to support our traditional products. Proudly protecting a way of life,
