I am pleased to announce the UNG shares the novice state debate championship this year with Morehouse College, and had the top speaker in novice debate as well as a finalist in varsity debate. UNG attained the following 17 awards: In Novice (first year) debate: State Champions: Brandon Mealer (UNG) and Khalil Waddell (Morehouse) 2nd Place: Ashlee Rose and Jarrett Kirby Semifinalist: Darrelyn Thomas and Abigail Word Semifinalist: Josh Keith and Taylor Robinson Quarterfinalist: Pablo Picazo and Chase Yarbrough Quarterfinalist: Ana Ramirez and Taylor Ockunzzi 1st Place Speaker: Josh Keith 2nd Place Speaker: Ashlee Rose 3rd Place Speaker: Darrelyn Thomas 4th Place Speaker: Abigail Word 5th Place Speaker: Taylor Robinson 6th Place Speaker: Brandon Mealer 7th Place Speaker: Jarrett Kirby 8th Place Speaker: Chase Yarbrough Varsity Debate: 2nd Place: Anthony Harden and Corey Coffey 4th Place Speaker: Fernando Gonzalez 10th Place Speaker: Anthony Harden This marked the first time one school had swept the first five speaker awards in any division in this tournament, and the 17 awards represent at new UNG record for number of awards won at a state tournament. Some other notes: • The 17 awards brought the semester’s award total to 68, a new record for the Debate Team • Ashlee Rose becomes the first woman to participate in a final round at a GPDA tournament • Josh Keith’s first place speaker award represents UNG’s third for this semester. • The top eight speaker awards by far and away surpasses the performance of any debate team I have ever coached over a period of 25 years, and may be a first of any sort in this region. • The shared state title between Brandon Mealer of UNG and Khalil Waddell of Morehouse represents the first championship by a team consisting of members from different schools. • Aside from the swing team with Morehouse, the remainder of the quarterfinalists were from UNG. • The finalists appearance in Varsity Debate was also a first for UNG, and marked the first finalist appearances for any of UNG’s former constituent institutions since GSC’s team of Amon Kirk and Jarvis Johnson made finals in 2009. • I was elected First Vice President of the GPDA, which sets the stage for UNG to host the GPDA State Championship Tournament in 2016 during my term as President of the Association.
