I am posting this to encourage animal owners to do just a little bit of research on heat exhaustion, to know what the signs are and exactly what to do and what not to do if you think your baby might be in trouble. Please everyone keep a very close eye on your fur babies in this heat! I had a big scare when Sunday night (6pm-ish) I took my Staffy out to throw the ball (which she chases VERY enthusiastically) and ended up taking her to the emergency vet with borderline heat exhaustion caused by over exertion. It wasnt sunny or too hot but it was humid*, she wasnt left in a hot car or out in the sun and she always has access to water. **Humidity hinders a dogs ability to cool themselves down (I did not know this before) and they can go down hill very quickly. We were out for about half an hour and she was acting completely normal the whole time. Even begging me to throw the ball one more time as I was saying its time to go home. Twenty seconds later, as we were walking to the car she started to stumble and looked scared and disoriented, she felt hot so I scooped her up and took her straight home in to her shell pool to cool down. After that she was up to the vet and stayed for the night to have fluids and for monitoring. I am always concious of my girls environment and what we were doing was not out of the ordinary so I was shocked that this happened to us. Now I have a much better understanding of my girls cooling system and I know that as a staffy she is more prone to heat exhaustion than some other breeds. After more than $600 and A LOT of stress (for both of us), she is home and doing well.
