I am probably being incredibly naive, but to me, as an investor in the future of Northumberland, why can the council simply decide not to pay for maintaining empty council houses and instead use that money to get all kids to the school of their choice ideally in Northumberland, and where there is not a suitable in-county option, work with the schools to use their new funds to bolster provision and quality - attracting inwards investment into the county instead of the reverse? So for example, Alnwick becomes the life science and genomics feeder for further education into Newcastle post 18 and the centre of excellence for catering and hospitality, or Berwick becomes the agricultural/horticultural centre of excellence for the NE, as well as hair/beauty, and/ or software/computing development and/ or the mechanical, design and renewable engineering hub for the region - i.e. each school looks to become world class in emerging and business led courses supported by the council strategically? Or should we not have such aspirations for our kids?
