I am reading -- actually re-reading, as I read parts of this book years ago when I was something of a creative writing wunderkind at Ohio State University -- the late John Gardners On Becoming a Novelist and reading this passage stopped me . . . and made me run to FB to type it out, as it sort of spoke to me and may speak to you, too More people fail at becoming successful business men than fail at becoming artists. This passage, to me, is even more timely in that just the other day I saw Jim Carreys commencement speech . . . and if I had a nickel for every time someone told me I either (a) looked like Jim Carrey or (b) was the love child of Jim Carrey and Vin Diesel, I would have, at a minimum, another happy day at Valley Thrift !! -- at MUM in which he said, in referring to his father: My father could have been a great comedian, but he didnt believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead he got a safe job as an accountant. All of that fell apart, he said, when his dad lost his job and the family fell on hard times. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which, was that you can fail at what you dont want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.
