I am reposting this because it is worth it. I was in Target recently, and the person at the customer service desk has down syndrome. She was the only person. She did not require a back up. She was amazing and very professional. I do not live near a Target and now there is one near my office, and I am thrilled to have an alternative to Walmart. She was telling everyone about the Target card. She picked up straight away on my dismissal, saying I did not want another credit card. Oh No, she said, it is NOT a credit card. And then proceeded to tell me all about the benefits, emphasizing the immediate 5% discount on all purchases and 30 days extra to return items. She was disappointed that I did not have my checkbook with me to produce a voided check required to sign up. I told her I would come back. She gave me an application with her name on it and asked if I could make sure i sought her out when I returned.....she would like the credit. Eve....you can count on it! I shudder when I think of the names we used to call people with Down Syndrome. I realize that not all people with Down Syndrome are going to be the same -- not all will work a customer service desk alone like Eve or open a restaurant like Tom. But it was so incredible what love, stimulation and training can do. Things ALL of us need to thrive.
