I am retiring this school year from my position as Treasurer of BHCS where I have been employed since June 1977. My responsibilities chiefly include treasurer, payroll clerk, accounts payable, human resources, 19-A records officer, health insurance clerk, preparation of Board of Education agenda/minutes, cooperative purchasing, workmen’s comp claims, inventory, graduation (scholarships, awards, programs, caps & gowns, diplomas), extra-classroom central treasurer. The list is vast. Way back when I was hired as a part-time typist by Superintendent, Mr. Elston Ecker. In July 1979, when long-time employee Lucine LaTant retired, I became the school’s district treasurer. I’ve learned a lot about our school over the years, first as a student, then as an employee and further as a parent of a student who attended Pre-K through grade 12. In addition, my mother, Mary Lynn James Hulsizer (Class of 1952), attended and graduated here. I reside just outside of Belleville with my husband, Bradley, our son, Chad, and our wonderful, crazy four legged friends who keep us very amused and busy. There is Chad’s Chihuahua, Beanz, who is smart as a whip our two kitty cats, Moe and GiGi, who are as different as night and day. (I think it’s the difference between a male and a female!?!) When our son went off to college, being left with an empty nest, I decided to go to school. Working full-time and raising a son who was very active, especially in high school (NHS, FFA, Boy Scouts, baseball (with me as the official scorekeeper), legion baseball (scorekeeper also), basketball, soccer…..), my universe had its focal points. In Fall 2003, I began a program with Jefferson Community College and SUNY Potsdam, graduating in December of 2005 with an Associate in Science with my major as Business Administration from JCC. After attending JCC, I took a semester off to regroup. I then began classes with SUNY Potsdam in Fall 2006 and received my Bachelor of Science majoring in Business Administration in May 2008. Currently, and for the past two years, I have volunteered my services to the UAB, BCS, BHCS Graduates’ Association as the Corresponding Secretary/Treasurer. I truly enjoy gathering information for and sending out the annual newsletter/banquet invitation and keeping the mailing (e-mail) list as current as possible and seeing the successes of past graduates. Although I am retiring, I am not quite ready to leave BHCS. I believe that my experience has given me the tools to be an asset to the district as a board member. I would welcome the opportunity to play a part in weathering the challenges faced while striving to give our children the education they need and deserve to make it out there in the big, wide world. They are the focus, what a school exists for. Sometimes I think we have lost sight of that very important detail. I wholeheartedly support the statements made on the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) webpage concerning the roles and responsibilities of a school board member at: nyssba.org/leadership-dev/what-does-a-school-board-member-do/ A board member is a representative of the entire community, a steward of the district’s resources, a leader of the district, an advocate for education. It is the Board’s job to focus on the ENDS – maintaining strong ethical standards; creating a shared vision and establishing goals, standards and strategies to transform that vision into reality; creating a healthy environment, both physically and emotionally, for work and learning by accentuating and reinforcing the positive and correcting the negative; adopting a budget to align resources to improve and account for student achievement; ratify collective bargaining agreements; and, adopt and maintain policy - policy that will be implemented. It is the Superintendent’s job to focus on the MEANS – how to accomplish the vision and goals the Board has established. Please exercise your right as a citizen of BHCS by voting on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 for budget/board member between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. in the school foyer. It is ultimately the Board’s responsibility to ensure student success!
