I am sad about Tony Benn. I saw him when he was touring the festivals with Roy Bailey performing what might best be called an oration with musical interludes. He described the history of mans resistance to oppression and exploitation in England from the 1500s to the present day - not the most promising of material youd think, for a sunny day at a music festival. But working from the far past to the present day, he described key events with a mix of first person descriptions, and then Roy Bailey would sing a traditional song from that time, be it a song for going off to war or lamenting a dead loved one who died for a cause or a peasants call to arms. The end result was incredibly moving, and they kept the entire audience completely spellbound for over an hour, even people who had just wandered in accidentally or were initially scornful. At the end, we all leaped to our feet and gave a heartfelt standing ovation, which again, is not something you see every day at a festival. RIP Mr Benn.
