I am saddened with the situation at the August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh. I have such respect for Wilsons work - his love letter to his neighborhood. One of the perks of having worked for the Huntington for so long is getting to have worked on so many of his shows before their moves to NY, starting with Jitney in 1998. Getting to see his work first hand, it moves you. It gets inside you and makes you evaluate. I feel like the purpose for the center is truly rooted in the idea that Wilson had stated over and over, the hope that the struggle and the common experience could heal a neighborhood ripped apart by it. But poor management and the reality that there need to be an audience willing to come out and support the center looks to have crippled this great idea to bring arts back to a community needing it. “You can’t build it and they will come,” Mr. Southers said. “Not when you’re trying to work with a community that is not traditional theatergoers or cultural consumers.” I hope the conservator works some magic and buys the center some time.
