I am saying goodbye to the concept of GOALS. Heres the thing: When we set a goal, we are creating a vision for the future using only what we know right now on our current level of understanding. We are saying, Based on what I have experienced up until now, I want THIS, and Im not going to stop until I get to that finish line After this, we proceed to sacrifice a certain amount of time, energy, money, etc. on creating that. We stay focused only on the vision we saw before and often beat ourselves up if we dont reach it. The problem is - usually by the time we get there, if we get THERE at all, we have grown far beyond the vision we could see before. We are no longer the person we were when we set that goal, and now the result hardly matters to us anymore. And all the while all the beating ourselves up was quite silly - because in reality, here and now, we might not even WANT the goal anymore in the first place! This is where... -Trying to prove a point to be right -Doing things to impress others -Fixating on self-sabotaging behaviors ... and many more effects come into play. I have made literally hundreds of goal lists in my life. Of COURSE we want to get things done and setting a destination in mind can be helpful. But unless we see that its the journey that will be valuable anyway, true satisfaction is off the table. Heres my suggestion that Im finding works... Have ONE thing at a time that you want to do. JUST ONE. Look at what you really want, and figure out ONE thing that is most important for you RIGHT NOW - and then go do it. I guarantee you that #2, #3, #4, #5 and more will all be COMPLETELY DIFFERENT after you have done that #1 thing than they would have been if you mapped them all out never having experienced your #1. My new focus in this next chapter of my life, my keyword theme, is EXPERIENCE. As opposed to my old paradigm of waiting UNTIL something so I could X, or getting lost in a fantasy world of thoughts and plans and desires, I am exclusively interested in squeezing out as much experience as possible. When we let go of pre-conceptions of what the future MUST look like, we are free to see what is actually right in front of us. We are opened up to new possibilities and unchained from the confines of our own mind. We can let NEW thoughts flow through us with ease, and experience so much more than we ever knew possible.
