I am shocked and grief stricken to learn the death of Obbo Alemayehu Atomesa. And express my profound sorrow and condolences for the people of Oromia in general and his family in particular. Alemayehu Atomesa, who is one of the youngest leaders of EPRDF was born into a Protestant family in Sere village, Bello Boshe Woreda of Eastern Welega. Alemayehu rose from a humble background to become one of the most powerful politicians within the ruling party. He joined the anti Derg regime forces two years before the fall of Derg. He had worked his way up through the ranks of the civil service, starting his career as a teacher and ending up in charge of Information Bureau of the Oromia Region and as a General Manager of Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency /ERTA/. He was elected member of the Oromia Region’s Council in 2009 and he became President of the Oromia Regional State after a year. Alemayehu earned a law degree and a master’s degree in Public Policy from the Ethiopian Civil Service College and the Chinese Beijing University. Alemayehu Atomesa who has served as chair of the Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO), and the President of the Oromia Region was hailed by his strength and leadership charisma. Since he came to power the President has been taking serious measures to promote good governance in the region. Alemayehu is really an emblem to the state’s struggle against corruption. He fought corrupt individuals by letting them serve their hand. He gave lesson to the corrupt individuals and bestows confidence to those fighting all forms of rent seeking activities. He, like his comrade, the great leader Meles Zenawi, scarified his health serving his nation even at times of worsened heath condition. By any measures, leading the largest of the countrys regions, while battling with severe disease was nothing but adore and commitment to the betterment of one’s people and country. After serving for more than 25 years and following his weakening health condition, he handed a resignation letter to the party. OPDO accepted it with regret and respect. Thus his resignation as President of the region has become effective since February 18. To me the former President of Oromia Region Alemayehu Atomesa is a hero of the great nation Oromia and a proud to all Ethiopian. You leading this great people of Oromia have a lot to learn from him. He is a point of reference to devotion, respect and integrity to a cause. May your soul rest in peace. You will be missed and remain in our hearts. May God give his family, the strength to overcome the situation.
