I am so incredibly disheartened and discouraged by what I had to put my first grade students (aka...6 & 7 year olds) through today. :( Im so glad I was given two whole days to first build a community in my classroom, earn their trust and teach them that its safe to take risks. Oh, wait...that doesnt happen in two days. Yet, this week I had to make them take a test about material of which they know NOTHING, and try to convince them that it was going to be okay. Guess what??? Its not okay! Public education has lost its mind!!! And it is becoming increasingly more difficult to advocate for a system in which I no longer agree with- a system that I was once so incredibly passionate about. To anyone who cares about fixing this horribly broken, wrongly prioritized system thats not doing right by our kids, its time to start asking questions, writing letters and getting vocal. What we are doing to kids is NOT RIGHT!
