I am so tired of my fellow academics talking about the only real job being a tenure-track or tenured one. And Im especially tired of colleagues who should know better--feminist, Marxist, queer, and people of color colleagues--reproducing the logic of the academy, which, of course, is designed to exclude and exploit, never more so than at this moment in history. Academia is a place where solidarity and loyalty are virtually impossible--its unwise to trust anyone--and its sad to see so many smart people, so many folks I really admire, fall victim to the most reactionary impulses of human nature. All jobs are real. All work should be valued and justly compensated. Tenure is the ultimate privilege. It would be nice if more of my colleagues interrogated theirs.
