I am still disappointed in academias fallacious assumption that all pole dancers are in the skin industry. I am disappointed in the assumption that academia has that pole studios (or student pole dancing clubs) are stripper factories which do nothing but supply the local strip joints with fresh talent. I am disappointed that pole fitness is not actually acknowledged as a form of fitness from academia. My disappointment does remind me that I exist in my little pole world bubble and that those on the outside of that bubble dont understand fundamentally what pole dancing for fitness is. They dont understand that pole fitness is for the practitioner and not an audience. I forget that the majority of people out there have never stepped foot inside a pole studio, which is full of encouragement and laughter and a place where women learn not to focus on what their bodies look like and all the shame that goes along with that but what their bodies can do. A place that transforms the image in the dressing room mirror from one of resentment and self hate to one of self acceptance and love. A place where goals are set and achieved constantly. I question academia, How can this be bad and how can those on the outside presume to deny this to women? I want scholars who publish these articles to show me the logic that says pole dancing is not fitness because a pole is also used as a skin industry prop. What is missing from every article that merges the pole fitness world with the skin industry one are actual statistics stating the number of women who take up pole fitness and end up in the skin industry versus the general population of women who end up in the skin industry. Are there cross overs? Yes. But its a simple venn diagram folks. Until then, these articles are based on conjecture. Lets just say Im used to it from the general public, but when I see academia getting it wrong over and over again and unable to understand a basic and fundamental concept that those who practice pole fitness are not necessarily participants of the skin industry, or have aspirations of being in the skin industry, I get a little disappointed. I expect better from people who understand logic. I dont expect assumptions. The unwillingness of the general public to accept pole fitness as a sport, industry, and community by itself should never carry over to legitimate academic disciplines. I may not expect more from the general public but I expect more from the sciences. So I challenge the academic world to prove me wrong.
