I am stunned and saddened to hear that Robin Williams has died. I did not know him well, but I have fond memories of the time he generously volunteered to be the surprise act that opened for the Rock Bottom Remainders when we performed at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. It took us a while to recover from his hilarious warm-up act. Lou and I also had dinner and lunch with him from time to time, as guests of our friend and his wife at the time, Marsha Williams, and with our friend Emily Scott Pottruck. And on a few occasions,we spent time with him backstage at shows in New York and San Francisco. Those few moments remind me once again that the wildly funny man with a pinball wit and a thousand different voices was quite different from the thoughtful, quiet and gracious man off-stage. I also recall, however, one lunch in a Chinese restaurant where the all-Chinese clientele did not recognize him and he suddenly burst into a maniac role, which had us laughing hysterically as diners frowned with disapproval. We often think of comedians and actors as people we know well because they give so much of themselves in performance and with satiric truth we recognize. We thank Robin Williams for his many great gifts to the world.
