FB# 41:- TRAVEL WITH ME……….SYDNEY NOVA SCOTIA… CANADA Like so many maritime communities, Sydney was settled by loyalists escaping the former colonies after the American revolution. In the century that followed, its population was bolstered by the arrival of Scots fleeing the infamous highland Clearances; then by a mishmash of immigrants—from Wales, the Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Lebanon and beyond— fleeing poverty at home. The latter were lured by the promise of work in rich coal fields and the industries arising from them, most notably steel manufacturing. by the early 1900s, Sydney was a rough-edged boom town boasting the continent’s largest steel plant (that era is evoked in fall on your Knees by Cape bretoner anne-marie macDonald). but things got rougher still when the industrial base eventually collapsed, turning the boom into a bust. This harbor side city has struggled to regain its economic footing ever since. Nevertheless, it remains Nova Scotia’s second-largest urban center and the island’s service hub. In tourism terms, Sydney offers a revitalized waterfront, a smattering of heritage attractions, plus convenient access to Cape Breton hotspots including the fortress at louisbourg and bras d’or lake. Sights To SEE • Cape breton University • Casino Nova Scotia • Cossit house • Sydney mines heritage museum and fossil Centre • fortress of louisbourg National historic Site of Canada • marconi National historic Site of Canada
