I am stunned, outraged and saddened to learn MLC will close. The trigger was pulled although no one said “Hands up!” I don’t care how many “consultants” said you don’t tell your stakeholders that you’ll close or they’ll flee. That’s mistrust! I thought faith-based organizations didn’t violate their stakeholders’ trust by not communicating openly. They could have had the courtesy to say, “We’re $800K in debt, we may have to close the camp for 2 years and sell in 2 years unless we have a capital campaign!) How hard is that? Personally, I think we have 3 options: 1.OCCUPY MICHILUCA! 2. Create an LLC: Faith and Nature Retreats: Ecumenical Outdoor Ministries. We need a thousand pledges of $1,000 (checks written and held in escrow until the camp goes on the market).Then we buy it, have a capital campaign, hire a real marketer and develop a REAL strategy. This is thinking ecumenically outside the box. After all, church camping is not just confirmation camp!) 3. Failing all else, we insist the property be sold to a nature conservancy based on the recent Michigan model to stop more condo building north of Traverse and The Homestead.
