I am surprised by how commonly I find that womens lower ranges are ignored when assessing voice type. Often I find sopranos who have been labeled as such by a choir director or teacher based on accessible higher pitches alone, having ignored a substantial lower range. Given the different ways that women are encouraged to sing, I cant help but feel strongly that this is essentially the same as labeling a baritone a tenor because of his strong falsetto, a practice which actually was the case in Baroque music, and apparently persists today in the instruction of women.
