I am very disappointed by todays Supreme Court ruling against the Aereo SERVICE. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion, and I am in no way stating that I am an expert in Copyright Law, Broadcast Law (if thats a thing), or anything else for that matter. Between todays ruling and the previous strikes against Network Neutrality, it is a sad time for the Digital Frontier. To say that it is illegal to rebroadcast something that is already sent over-the-air for FREE seems absurd. My wife and I have been looking forward to becoming Aereo subscribers as soon as it became available in the Philadelphia area, now it looks like that will not be happening. We are cable-cutters, and that has come with a cost for us, but the benefit has far outweighed that cost for now. The only thing we have truly been missing is the ability to watch Sports, News and broadcast television networks. We have tried numerous antennas, of a varying range of price and quality, all to no avail. I remember a time when I could sit in my bedroom with an un-extended, Rabbit Ears antenna and pick up both Philadelphia and New York City broadcast stations with no issue at all. Now I place my $200 HD Digital Ready Antenna at the highest point possible, only to find out that I can receive only 2 stations; both located in the Lehigh Valley - neither of which are a major broadcast station. Ever since the transition to Digital from Analog, we have seen a major decline in transmission strength, and the range for broadcast stations has diminished GREATLY. Second, to prevent a company like Aereo from rebroadcasting major news outlets (NBC, FOX, NBC, CBS) seems like a violation of our right to know. I shouldn’t have to look to the Internet to get my news, just because I live an area that once received broadcast stations just fine, but now does not. Third, Aereo never claimed to be selling TV; the service they provide is nothing more than a web based Digital Video Recorder (DVR); much like the TiVo’s that so many people use today. In order to sign up, you need to live within the Service area for the stations they record. They are not enabling users to watch shows or stations from the other side of the nation, but instead expanding upon a service that should be available to every person in that area. Oh well, I will still refuse to subscribe to a Cable or Satellite Provider for the time being, and continue to hope that one day theyll all get their crap together. #aereo #rant #digitalfrontier #cablecutter
