I am very, very sad about Robin Williams - and I will always be grateful to him for the joy and oomph that he brought to my imagination. But I am also really irritated (and worried) by all the statuses Im reading about how mental illness - depression especially but not only - are a mark of creative talent, a special suffering given to those who are set apart from the common herd. People, that is bullshit. Not only is a complete fiction, but it is also deeply insulting to all those many, many people who have mental illnesses and arent Van Gough or whatever famous person you valourise for being sick and also talented. And all the many many creatives who do not have a mental illness. Please dont romanticize depression that way. Nothing good comes from doing that.
