I am, what was called in times past, a rube because I grew up in a rural setting ("up the hollow" in WV terms.) I went to a one room school that contained the 1st six grades and one teacher, our "rest rooms" were outside toilets and our drinking water came from well on the property that was brought up by a hand pump. I walked one and half miles each way to school, regardless of weather. We did not have multi-million dollar buildings nor computers or other technological gizmos; and yet of those in my community, in and around my age, there emerged a 3 star General; a noted Psychologist with a practice in New York; Several School Teachers; successful business people and government leaders. I say all of this because I recognize the advantage we had over those who are unfortunate enough to be raised in the modern, technological age. We raised our own food and had gardens and orchards and livestock. I also mention this because as I am reading scriptures I notice teaching throughout both O.T and N. T that teaches eternal moral truths by using agriculture analogies and metaphors . The importance of pruning trees; breaking fallow ground; proper shepherding of sheep; fertilizing and watering; proper harvesting, etc. are major teaching points of Scripture, for example, Gal 6:7-9 A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
