I am wondering about Saint Lucia Day celebrations, and if theres - TopicsExpress

I am wondering about Saint Lucia Day celebrations, and if theres any place that still celebrates this any more. I found one local event organized for Calgary, here in Canada, but they are doing it on the 16th. There were far more notices for Christmas celebrations for people from the island nation of St. Lucia. For myself, I was raised in the melting pot of Southern California, and there were not too many ethnic celebrations, other than some of the popular Mexican holidays. My family knew they had Scandinavian roots, as well as German and English, but we celebrated just what was advertised on TV, like most. In 1970, I took Swedish in university, and there was extra credit for watching Swedish movies, so that was I am Curious, Blue, and there was an assignment to translate a favorite song , and perform it, in Swedish. But the best part was right before Christmas break, for a Saint Lucia Day party, and my wife made saffron pastries, and I made glögg to share with all. It was my first ethnic celebration, and fun. My ancestors from Scandinavia, from Norway and Sweden, did not celebrate customs from the homeland, and spoke only in English at home when others were around; even my Great Aunt, fluent in Norwegian and English, never gave a hint that she was anything but Californian. Those of you from communities that have retained some of the traditions of the homeland should be glad that youve been able to experience this. God jul!
