(I am writing this because i see and hear people complain about this issue frequently, so I thought might share with hopes that some people might rethink the issue) A Little History: Archaeologist and Anthropologist alike have done numerous studies and shown a significant about of evidence to show that the Americas were not only settled by the indigenous people, but that many of the civilizations had made advancements that were impressive even by Europes standards. -The first official European Settlement was in Acadia (which is in what is now called Maine, USA) in 1604 by the French, not Jamestown which was settled in 1607, but its is the Plymouth colony, which was settled in 1620, thats considered the first successful English settlement. Acadia is often overlooked because as time went by the French sort of stop checking-in on the Acadians whose success was largely due to their ability to assimilate with the local Native American population (rather than fight). -The settlers that would carve out America and secure its Independence were predominately English or of English descent, yet much of the territory secured by the British crown included settlers from Spain, France, Sweeden, Germany, and of course the indigenous Natives (new citizens by choice or otherwise) -The Mexican American War, ended in 1848, which lead to the acquistion of what is now the Southwestern states of the US (CA, NM, AZ, TX, NV) (this acquisition also came with new citizens of Spanish or Native descent) -The abolition of slavery meant that people of African descent living the US would now be citizens, but this also meant that these people were free to speak their native tongues without threat of violence or any other recourse. -Up to and throughout the 20th century many different groups of people migrated to the U.S. and most of them spoke a native tongue other than English (i.e. Italians, Germans, Russians, Chinese, etc.) and others may have spoken broken English but still retained a native language (Irish, Dutch, French, etc.)
