I apologize for not letting you all know sooner. I have been rather busy. After a perfectly normal Friday (8/2), about 5:30pm dad got sick. After six and a half hours of test at Simi Valley Hospital, he was transferred to Kaiser, Woodland Hills. I went home and went to bed while my brother and sister stayed for the transfer. Diagnosis: pneumonia (again) due to aspiration(again), fever of 102, septic and his liver enzyme numbers were elevated. While at Simi Hospital, his blood pressure dropped several times to 90 over 30. By all appearances he wasn’t going to make it. Kaiser said the rapid decline was due to the stomach acid entering his lungs sending his internal organs into shock. After three days of fluid and antibiotics he is scheduled to be released to go in either hospice or palliative care, depending on his swallow test in the morning. If you visit him, please do not mention hospice or palliative care. Ana (my sister-in-law) and I will do what we can and then hire help if/when needed. Because of the risk of further aspiration, and the viscous cycle of pneumonia, he will be off his meds.
