I apologize for the long post ahead :) Its been one year since Haydens accident, and I still cringe every time I get an early morning phone call. Im not sure that that feeling will ever go away. But its also been 365 days in a row that Ive gotten to thank God for my little brother. And I choose to focus on that. It hasnt been easy for me though. I cant speak for anyone else. The phone call, hearing the words Hayden and Life Flight, the dream-like state your mind goes into upon entering the emergency room and being greeted by one of the Sisters at OSF, because you really cant believe this is actually happening. Then came the conversation with the doctors: Hes got several facial lacerations......ok, hes my baby brother and hell always be handsome. Hes got a fracture in his neck.....ok, hes not paralyzed and he will heal. Hes got a wrist fracture and a pelvic fracture.....ok, hes got a long road to recovery but nothing that cant healed with time. His kidneys have failed.....ok....wait......what?!? He will need one leg amputated, possibly two.....Oh dear God....Im going to faint..... Its hard to wrap my mind around wishing something had never happened, but, at the same time, knowing that that same thing has also shown you a strength youve never known. The strength of my Mom and Step-dad, the strength of my sisters, the strength of Abby, and the strength and pure miracle that is my brother. I want everyone to know that this year of healing was also aided by you and the acts of kindness you have shown to Hayden and the family. At one of the hardest times of our lives, each and every one of you lifted us up by making phone calls, saying prayers, making food, donating money, supporting the benefit......there are so many ways you have provided help to us this past year. Thank you. My brother and sisters (I include Abby in this category :) are my inspiration and I love them dearly.
