I appreciate all the comments since I filed to run for school board. There are some general points that I want to cover and extend an invitation to anyone who has questions regarding the position or issues to send me a message and I will call you or meet you to discuss them. One concern that I knew might arise is the fact that my wife, Ann is currently on the school board. Her term will run out next summer so if elected our terms would not overlap even a full year. Further, there are no restrictions against such and since there are 5 members of the board it takes 3 to form a majority and make decisions. There are also things upon we will disagree as well. Our motivation to serve on school board is to serve the school and community and I think those that know us will see that and not have a concern regarding this issue. My experience with the school goes all the way back as a volunteer in 2000 and 2001 when there were only 2 campuses. Serving as a watchdog dad and helping run copies and read to kids made it apparent that there were lots of opportunities beyond teaching in our schools. My how far we have come. We graduated our first one this year and I cant tell you how proud that she can call herself a Blackhawk. All the way from first grade in what is now the ALE school to a very nice high school. It is this experience that has been witness to such change that extends vision towards what we can be with a new Academy opening this fall. Having the experience of passing four children through each campus we now have here provides a much clearer snapshot of the current needs of each. I believe we can not only continue the excellence, but reach toward a legacy of achievement. My personal interests in the school board position are to improve the communication of grades and progress in a timely and parent friendly manner, full establishment of the Academy as a center of learning and training that changes the lives of students and improve overall parental engagement. Our current grade reporting system has opportunities and our students and parents need something more functional. The Academy is exciting and challenging. We are really developing something unlike most other charter schools. When graduates leave the Academy they will own a diploma and something that is more valuable - a training that will enable them to go into a field of work either as a career or to pay for further education. The high school diploma alone has become severely devalued except for those who are building it as an academic resume for college. Lastly, as challenging as schedules are these days we somehow need to find ways to bring the community closer to the schools as a whole through parental engagement being seen as a partner in the education business instead of an adversary. This I can say in all certainty: regardless of who wins this election, it will be someone who cared enough to file and from what I see will bring a skill set and perspective that will benefit the school. And the school is after all THE community. The deadline for voter registration for the school board election is in August. I encourage you to register if you havent and vote how you see fit, but most importantly vote.
