I arrived today at Tonanau in Panguna, accompanying the body of the Late Louis Taneavi. He was caught up in violence between ethnic groups in Lae. I dont feel any hatred for people who killed Louis, only sadness that human life has lost its value. I cannot help but feel sorry for those who are killing each other in the most brutal way. The carnage is unthinkable when you realize that the whole thing may have started from something trivial like a domestic argument. I have live through the crisis and have experience people being killed almost every week. But nothing is as shocking as this. Even the police cannot protect people who have succumbed to the law of the jungle. Government in Lae must exercise its authority. It is not the first time this has happened in there. As time passes it may get worse. Currently, people are butchering each other, houses are burnt and no one seems to bat an eyelid. Before I went to Lae, I did not know the extent of the problem but it now seems to me that people in the settlements have lost their power of reasoning. It has probably become a common place with people there and it seems no one really cares to do anything about it. I think the authorities are sleeping and the second largest city in PNG is slipping back into savagery. Govt authority in the city must wake up and do something about this problem otherwise God help us.
